Context:
Smile Theatre is a registered charity based in Toronto, and is Canada’s only professional theatre company dedicated to performing for seniors and those living in care environments.  In operation since 1972, Smile Theatre has been creating and touring small scale musical theatre productions to Retirement Residences, Long Term Care homes, Hospitals, Seniors’ Centres throughout Toronto, Ontario and across Canada. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the company has been actively developing and presenting performances and specialized programs through digital platforms and its new core set of programs, Smile Online.

Stage Management at Smile Theatre:
The Stage Manager at Smile Theatre is considered to be a member of the Core Ensemble, and is a dynamic artist working primarily in in-person performances, with some online work as necessary (if restrictions dictate).  They are an artist with a special interest in connecting with seniors and those who live in care environments. The ensemble contract at Smile Theatre includes one CAEA local touring production (TYA contract), as well as on-going Smile Serenades visits – which run simultaneously.

They are flexible, generous and open collaborators, able to work both collaboratively in group settings, and independently. They are willing and able to take leadership when called upon to do so, and also support and encourage the leadership of fellow ensemble members.

Most importantly, the Stage Manager is a positive, caring, genuine individual, willing and eager to give time and attention to isolated seniors and people in care settings, and collaborate with fellow artists.
The Stage Manager will manage the ensemble production during rehearsal and performances, and participate in Smile Serenades visits, coordinating call times and local touring schedule with the Serenades coordinator, and if possible drive the company vehicle.
