Assistant Theatre Designer

Smile Theatre is seeking an Assistant Theatre Designer to work in Toronto, with a designer working remotely from Hong Kong. The ideal candidate will have experience in theatre design and be able to coordinate shopping, sourcing for set items and props and costumes, and fittings for costumes. Knowledge of Taiwanese/Hong Konger/Chinese culture is an asset.

This playful and lively project is a Chinese version of “The Honest Woodcutter”, an Aesop Fable.  The production is a collaboration between YaTong theatre in Taiwan, and Smile Theatre in Toronto – and will feature artists from each. It will be presented in Mandarin and English, and will tour to retirement residences and care homes, as well as schools in the Toronto area.

Dates: Rehearsals April 17 – May 5
Fee: $2000

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the design and sourcing of scenery items and props
  • Coordinate with the designer to ensure costumes are sourced and fitted in a timely manner
  • Shop for and purchase necessary props and materials
  • Attend fittings and rehearsals as needed
  • Collaborate with the team to ensure the production is executed according to the design vision

Requirements:

  • Experience in theatre design, with a focus on props and costumes
  • Familiarity with shopping and sourcing materials in the GTA
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
