Description:
Sunshine Sketches is a delightful new musical based on a sequence of stories by Stephen Leacock first published in 1912. It is generally considered to be one of the most enduring classics of Canadian humorous literature. Set in Mariposa, a fictional small town on the shore of Lake Wissanotti, the colourful characters of small-town Canada come to life.

Description:
A heart-warming musical treat, adapted by Leslie Arden from the classic story by O. Henry. Della and Jim are a married couple who are low on money.   Della sells her hair to pay for a watch for Jim’s Christmas present. Meanwhile, Jim has sold his watch to pay for a set of combs for Della’s long beautiful hair.   Although Jim and Della are now left with gifts that neither one can use, they realize how far they are willing to go to show their love for each other, and how priceless their love really is.

Fit as a Fiddle know how to get the energy and excitement going when they begin each show with an upbeat number on fiddle and spoons. They ease into their hour with a unique three minute dance inspired follow-along movement segment lead by Margot featuring Aidan on jazz violin. For the next 50 minutes, audiences are engaged from start to finish with an entertaining performance featuring sing-a-long favourites that include well known songs from around the world. Musical numbers performed in French, Spanish, Hebrew, Yiddish and Russian add an international flavour to their shows. Their extensive repertoire, accomplished musicianship and twelve years experience working together, ensures that Fit as a Fiddle’s live performances deliver an extremely high standard of musical entertainment for older adults.

The weather outside may be frightful, but Dora Mavor Moore Award winner and Smile Theatre performer Paula Wolfson will brighten the darker days with songs, poetry and prose about all that Winter has up it’s sleeve. This 50-minute cabaret can be customized with a sparkle of Channukah or Christmas favourites by request.

Paula is a 37-year theatre professional and the Conductor of “Singing With Parkinson’s” – group singing classes specifically designed for those with Parkinson’s Disease.

Description:

Smile Theatre associate Michelle Piller recalls some of her most happy, comical and poignant memories of Christmas in Holiday Memories. Flying poinsettias, burnt Christmas puddings, dried out turkey…these are a few of her nostalgic moments. Above all, Christmas holidays has always been about the music for Michelle. Born a singer, and performing to audiences throughout North America for twenty years, she shares her favourite secular holiday classics in this show. Towards the end she opens it up to requests from the audiences, so that all may join in and sing treasured carols.

Michelle is an avid stage and television actor. A lover of music from every genre, she sings it all: from Broadway to Blues, Classical to Country and Gospel to Pop. It was a special honour to sing Carol Barnett’s The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass with the Distinguished Choirs of New York at Carnegie Hall in 2013. Favourite television credits include appearances as Aunt Kathy on The Next Step (Canadian Family Channel). When Michelle steps off-stage or off-camera she is passionate about writing, musical direction, and encouraging young artists to step fully into the joy of storytelling.

Description:
Especially designed for Long Term Care, four serenaders offer intimate musical theatre performances, visit, sing, chat, and brighten the day of seniors one-on-one and in small groups.

5 weeks, 1 hour sessions + 1 cabaret style performance

Description:
Over 5 weeks, two musical theatre performers visit and gather songs and memories from a small group of seniors, collecting musical favorites and listening to life stories.  The performers then create a cabaret-style performance based on the songs and stories collected in a performance for the whole community at the end of the session.

Sing-a-long and Smile

Schedule:
4 weeks, 1 hour sessions + 1 Sing-a-long Musical performance

Description:
Over 4 weeks, residents learn the chorus parts of well-known popular musicals, such as “Oklahoma” and “Sound of Music”.  The workshop culminates in sing-through of the musical, with special guest performers playing the lead roles.
