Smile Theatre is a registered charity that exists to enrich the lives of seniors in care by presenting meaningful, well-crafted, professional performances created just for them.

The Need

Image module

⅔ of seniors in care report that they often feel lonely and isolated. Care homes need more opportunities to bring people together, and create enjoyable experiences for residents, staff, caregivers and family members to share.

Wellness for seniors includes experiences that engage, uplift and inspire, and promote togetherness and community. Rich, poor, healthy or suffering – every senior deserves to feel connected to others in a meaningful way.

Live performances are a powerful tool to provide connection, community and positive experiences for seniors. Laughter, music, song, dance and stories help to lift spirits and create togetherness.  Meeting and chatting with young performers after the show is also a key part of the success of our productions.

History of Excellence

Smile Theatre has been serving seniors since 1972.  We have been recognized with the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for the Arts, The Brenda Donahue Award, and our work is supported by The Ontario Arts Council and the Toronto Arts Council and numerous caring private foundations, corporations and individuals. We do our work each year with diligence –  consistently, expertly, often unnoticed by the mainstream and with passion.

Our biggest accomplishment?  Our commitment to the highest quality performances, no matter how small the space we perform in, or whatever the circumstances.

Registered Charity – # 11925 4431 RR0001

Smile Theatre performs where seniors need us most, regardless of their financial resources.  We subsidize our fees with our fundraising efforts.  About 1/3 of our income comes from performance fees charged to our venues if they can afford it, the other 2/3 from arts councils, foundations, corporations and individuals.
